In April the Arctic Response Technology Joint Industry Programme (JIP) conducted a series of first-of-their-kind tests of an aerial oil spill response system for the Arctic offshore. The trials were the first operational combination of aerial application of herders and in situ burning, where herders were applied to an oil slick ignited by a manned helicopter. The tests were successfully completed, with five flybys over the ten day test period.

Validating this combination is potentially a step change for offshore oil spill response, with response times much faster than vessel support. The JIP is pleased to be able to share footage from the tests for your viewing. The results are currently being analysed and will be written up into a report, to be published on the JIP website.
