London, 07.04.14: The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) is pleased to announce that Gazprom Neft has joined the Arctic Oil Spill Response Technology Joint Industry Programme (JIP).
The JIP was launched in January 2012 to further build on existing knowledge and capabilities in the area of Arctic oil spill response and to carry out research in the following six areas: dispersant efficacy; trajectory modeling of oil in ice; remote sensing of oil in ice; mechanical recovery of oil in ice; environmental impacts of oil spills and oil spill responses; and in situ burn technologies.
The participation of Gazprom Neft demonstrates the continued commitment of the oil and gas industry to collaborate in advancing both prevention and response strategies as well as increasing understanding of potential impacts of oil on the Arctic marine environment. The JIP continues to welcome new members as it brings together the world’s foremost experts across industry, academia and independent research centres.

A significant body of scientific research and testing has been conducted over several decades on the techniques and technologies available for responding to oil spills in icy conditions, including the Arctic.
To build on this existing research, nine oil and gas companies (BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Eni, ExxonMobil, North Caspian Operating Company, Shell, Statoil and Total) established the Arctic Oil Spill Response Technology Joint Industry Programme (JIP).
The Joint Industry Programme (JIP) is coordinated by an Executive Steering Committee comprising representatives from each member company. The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) is providing project management expertise and industry experts and scientific institutions are being engaged to perform the scientific research.
The JIP officially launched in January 2012 at the Arctic Frontiers Conference in Tromsø, Norway and is scheduled to run through 2015. There are six technical working groups (TWG) each focusing on a different key area of oil spill response: dispersants; environmental effects; trajectory modeling; remote sensing; mechanical recovery and in-situ burning. There is also a field research group to pursue opportunities where the JIP could participate in possible field releases or field research to collect critical scientific and engineering data required to validate certain response technologies and strategies.
Each technical working group is led by recognized subject matter experts with years of experience in oil spill response research and operations. This JIP is bringing together the world’s foremost experts on oil spill response research, development, and operations from across industry, academia, and independent research centres. All research projects will be executed using current protocols and proven scientific technology, utilising the best and most appropriate available researchers, consultants, and laboratories. Research integrity will be ensured through technical peer review and public dissemination of results.
